The ACIJLP Calls upon the Egyptian President

To ratify the protocol establishing the African Court on Human Rights

The Arab Center for the Independence of Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP (calls upon the Egyptian President Dr. Mohamed Morsi, to take the necessary measures and procedures for ratification of Egypt to the Protocol establishing the African Court on Human Rights, in support of Egypt's role in international, regional and African events relevant to the protection of human rights.

The ACIJLP believes that, in line with the Egyptian's trend at this time and as part of effective role of the interest in African affairs, the Egyptian government should take urgent action on the ratification of the agreements ratified by Egypt in particular the protocol establishing the African Court on Human Rights.

The ACIJLP is concerned over the fact that Egypt's reluctance to ratify and accede to the Protocol of the African Court, represents a decline of Egypt's role in regional and international forums related to the protection and defense of human rights. While Algeria, Libya, the Comoros, Mauritania and Tunisia ratified the Protocol for the Establishment of the African Court of Human Rights, Egypt reluctant to ratify and accede to the Protocol.

The ACIJLP points out that the Arab Republic of Egypt has signed the protocol establishing the African Court on Human Rights on 17th February 1997 but did not ratify this protocol till the time of writing this statement .

It should be noted that the jurisdiction of the court is applied only to countries that have ratified the Court's Protocol but the jurisdiction does not extend to the signatory countries that have not ratified the Protocol. Twenty six countries have ratified the protocol until the date of 20th October, 2011
