Workshop on "The Egyptian Constitution and Penal Legislation

Between the Death Penalty and the Right to Life"

The Arab Center for the Independence of Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) organizes a workshop on "The Egyptian Constitution and Penal Legislation between the Death Penalty and the Right to Life" on the period from 31st March till 1st April 2012 at Pyramisa Hotel in Cairo.

the workshop is held in a period where Egypt is about to draft a new Constitution, the formation of the constituent Assembly is arising many issues, as well as the Egyptian Parliament's view towards legislation devoted to the death penalty and other severe penalties.

50 judges, public prosecutors, lawyers, parliamentarians, law professors, media figures and human rights activists will participate in the workshop.

The workshop discusses many topics such as the problems facing drafting of the Egyptian Constitution, the impact of such problems on the protection of the right to life, Egyptian penal legislation and the excessive use of the death penalty. In addition to discussing the Egyptian Parliament's trends on the death penalty and the right to life (armed robbery law draft - case study), Islamic law's Perspective on reducing the application of the death penalty, protecting the right to life, international penal legislation, its stance towards the death penalty (the international criminal court — case study), international covenants and conventions, the abolition of the death penalty and the progressive abolition proposals.

The workshop comes within the framework of the ACIJLP’s activities on the project “Reducing the application of the Death Penalty in the Arab States” which will continue throughout 2013, with financial support from the European Union, and includes a number of conferences, workshops, seminars, relevant research papers and training courses.
