The ACIJLP calls upon the Sudanese authorities

For the Immediate release of Dr. Amin Mekki Medani and Mr. Farouk Abu Issa

The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) expresses its profound frustration and his refusal over the arrest and detention of the Sudanese authorities to Dr. Amin Mekki Medani, head of the Arab Organization for Human Rights and the head of the Sudanese Organization for Human Rights, and Chairman of The Sudanese Human Rights Monitor, as well as Mr. Farouk Abu Issa, the head of opposition alliance National Consensus in Sudan.

The ACIJLP believes that what was done by the Sudanese authorities contradicts all conventions and covenants related to human rights, particularly the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, and the Declaration on the Protection of Human Rights Defenders. It is also considered an explicit breach to the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The ACIJLP also believes that the arbitrary arrest and detention of Dr. Amin Mekki Medani and Mr. Farouk Abu Issa, is not only a blatant violation of international conventions and agreements referred to, but also represents a departure from the Sudanese national legislation, in particular the provisions of both the Interim National Constitution of the Republic of the Sudan, 2005, and the law of National Security of 2010.

The ACIJLP points out that the prosecution against Dr. Amin Mekki Medani, and Mr. Farouk Abu Issa, comes as a result of exercising their right to organization, and the freedom of opinion and expression, and their role in the defense of human rights.

The ACIJLP holds the Sudanese authorities the full responsibility for the life of Dr. Madani and Abu Issa, and ensuring their right to bodily integrity. The ACIJLP also calls on the Sudanese authorities for their immediate release and to respect the international commitments and obligations of Sudan.

It should be noted that the Sudanese security authorities as result of signing (the Sudan Call) on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 in Addis Ababa; the Sudanese authorities arrested the head of opposition alliance National Consensus in Sudan Mr. Farouk Abu Issa, and Dr. Amin Mekki Medani, immediately upon their return to Khartoum. In addition to the news about the arrest of other leaders who also signed this document.
