The ACIJLP organizes a workshop on "The Death Penalty and the Right to life in the Divine laws and Positive legislation"
The Arab Center for the Independence of Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) organizes a workshop on "the Death Penalty and the Right to life in the Divine laws and Positive legislation" in the period from 10th to 11th March 2013 in Asotel Hotel in Assuit governorates.
50 judges, public prosecutors, lawyers, law professors, media figures and human rights activists will participate in the workshop. Many speakers and experts from Egypt and Arab States will co-chair the workshop.
The workshop discusses many topics such as the position of the right to life in international and national legislation and heavenly laws, the position of Islamic law (Shari'ah) on the protection of the right to life, opinion of the Islamic law on reducing the application of the death penalty and the position of Christian law of the right to life and the status of the death penalty. the workshop also addresses the agreement of national legislation with international covenants and trends on the death penalty, evaluating legislative and judicial guarantees of the death penalty in Egypt, evaluating the role of the death penalty in the protection of society and the right to life, legislative and practical strategies to reduce the application of the death penalty, and the impact of alternative sanctions of the death penalty in the protection of the right to life.
The workshop will be co-chaired by: Mr. Nasser Amin, lawyer and director-general of The Arab Center for the Independence of Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP), Chancellor\ Abdul Rahim Al-Kashef, President of the Court of Appeal, Chancellor\ Shehata Abdel Fattah, President of the Court of Appeal, Dr. Hamdi Murad, Islamic thinker and Jordanian human rights activist, father / Matta Shafiq, official in the development sector in Diocese of of Assiut for Coptic Catholics, and Mr. Mahmoud Murtada, expert in the field of human rights.
The workshop comes within the framework of the ACIJLP’s activities on the project “Reducing the application of the Death Penalty in the Arab States” which will continue throughout 2013, with financial support from the European Union, and includes a number of conferences, workshops, seminars, relevant research papers and training courses.
