Workshop on

The ACIJLP organizes a workshop for Jurists in Egypt on "The death penalty between the protection of the right to life in the divine laws and legislation status", and a seminar in Jordan under the auspices of the Jordanian Minister of Justice entitled "the Role of Electronic Media in reducing the Death Penalty"

 

The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) organizes a workshop on “The death penalty between the protection of the right to life in the divine laws and legislations" during the period from 27th to 28th February, 2013 at Basma Hotel in Aswan.

The workshop comes within the framework of the activities of ACIJLP's campaign on "Reducing the Application of the Death Penalty in the Arab States" which started in 2010 and will continue till 2013 and financed by the European Union.

50 judges, public prosecutors, lawyers, law professors and human rights activists will participate in the workshop, in addition to many experts from Egypt and the Arab States.

The workshop discuss the status of the right to life in the International and national legislation and divine law, the perspective of Islamic law (sharia) on the protection of the right to life, the Islamic law's approach on reducing the death penalty application, the extent to which national legislation agree with international Instruments and trends on the death penalty, evaluating the role of the death penalty on protecting society and the right to life, Legislative and practical strategies to reduce the application of the death penalty and the impact of the death penalty alternatives on the protection of the right to life.

The sessions of the workshop will be co-chaired by Mr. Nasser Amin, Lawyer and Director of The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP), Counselor\ Dr. Abdul-Rahim Al-Kashif, the President of the Court of Appeal, Prof. Hamdi Murad, professor of Islamic Law (Shari`ah) and Jordanian human rights activist, Mr. Mahmoud Mourtada, expert in the field of human rights and Father / Matta Shafeeq, Official of development sector in the Diocese of Assiut for Catholic Copts.

It should be noted that, prior to holding the events of the workshop, the ACIJLP organizes a seminar for media on "The Role of Electronic Media in reducing the death penalty" on 26th February 2013 in the Jordanian capital Amman.

It should also be noted that this seminar is organized under the auspices of the Jordanian Minister of Justice in cooperation with Sisterhood is Global Institute/ Jordan (SIGI/J), with the participation of 30 female/male participants and specialists in electronic media.

The seminar will discuss the role of the media in the fight against the death penalty by reducing crime, social networking tools as a means of reducing the death penalty, and the role of female/male young bloggers in reducing the death penalty.

The sessions of the seminar will be co-chaired by Ms. Asma Khader, president of Sisterhood is Global Institute/ Jordan (SIGI/J), Judge\ Mohammed Al-Tarawneh, President of the Court of Cassation and Ms. Mahasen Al-Emam, CEO of the Arab Women Media Center, Mr. Abdel Moneim Muslim, researcher at the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and Legal Professions (ACIJLP), Mr. Mustafa Al-Momani, expert in the field of modern media and information technology, Eng. Ahmed Al-Umrah, expert in social networking and Mr. Alaa Said Maghes, expert in information technology websites and blogs.

The workshop comes within the framework of the activities of ACIJLP's campaign on "Abolishing the Death Penalty in the Arab States" which started in 2010 and will continue till 2013 and financed by the European Union including a number of international and regional conferences, training courses and workshops in many Arab countries as well as many relevant research papers.
