First Training Seminar for Human Rights Defenders North Africa, July 2001: The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) in cooperation with Amnesty International held the Training Seminar for Human Rights Defenders – North Africa in Cairo from 7 to 9 July 2001. The opening speech was made by Ambassador Shadia Farag, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights. She asserted that human rights are a noble goal in itself, which entails the devotion and dedication of all its advocates. Following, there were introductory notes by Amnesty International and ACIJLP in presence of number of diplomats, Arab, foreign jurists and media figures. The seminar aimed at training human rights defenders from North Africa in national and international human rights mechanisms through widening their knowledge of international treaties, in addition to providing the opportunity to exchange experience, and strengthen support between human rights defenders in the region. Twenty-five trainees from human rights activists from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and sub-Saharan attended the training. Lectures in the training were given by experts from Amnesty International, The Arab Institute for Human Rights, Hisham Mubarak Center for Human Rights, Nadeem Center for Human Rights, The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession. § The table below shows non-governmental institutions involved:
